Who Should Attend?
Anyone who performs or manages any type of
excavation to install, repair or replace underground utilities including water
and wastewater systems, gas, phone and electric utilities. Water and wastewater
utility field personnel, safety program managers, utility inspectors,
contractors, supervisors and managers will benefit from this course.
Workshop
Description
State and federal regulations
require a Competent Person to be present on every job site where the earth is
opened and a person enters to do work. This includes sewer and water line
installation and repair, utility work, road and other construction. The
Competent Person requirement is met by understanding the rules, applying safety
requirements and having the authority on the job to implement the program.
Participants will learn the most recent federal OSHA and State Department of
Labor and Industry excavation, trenching and shoring regulations. Participants
will observe demonstrations and practice making visual observations and
performing manual tests to accurately determine soil types. They will gain vital
insights into suitable methods to protect workers and will use standards and
tables to select and apply protective equipment. Those who attend will also
become informed about traffic control, confined spaces, underground utilities,
water, falling loads, atmosphere and other hazards related to excavations.
Participants, after passing a written exam at the end of the course, will
receive a certificate confirming completion of 14 hours of Competent Person and
Cave-In Protection Safety Training.
